Here are some words of advice...
- Don't tear your ACL. ;)
 | Lots of accidents happen due to fatigue or lack of concentration.
If you are tired while doing high-speed or contact sports, take a rest
until you are able to concentrate on what you are doing. |
 | Make sure your legs are strong (especially the VMO that can take the
impact instead of your ACL in case of an injury). Keep yourself in
shape especially if you are going to engage in highly demanding sports. |
If you tore your ACL and chose to get surgery:
 | Make sure that your surgeon is competent and does ACL reconstructions
frequently, to ensure he/she is up to date with the latest techniques. |
 | Exercise and do your physical therapy consistently before the surgery,
that will make your muscles work faster after the surgery. |
 | Get as much information as you can, so that you know what to
expect. Go check my acl links. |
 | Take it easy for at least the first two months after the
surgery. You don't want to tear again. |
Regarding the type of surgery you choose:
 | The most important part is that your surgeon should be competent in
that particular technique.
 | I chose patellar tendon and the only problem I had had so far is the
lack of sensitivity on one side of my knee. The scar looks ugly
too. The patellar tendon is general stronger, and the fixation
using bone and titanium screws is strong too. |
